• Chateau Tour de Gilet 2012 Bordeaux Supérieur

We enjoyed the Château Tour de Gilet during our recent trip to Colorado for our nephew’s wedding. The rehearsal dinner was at Le Central, a cool French restaurant in Denver. I must digress for a moment to explain how horrible the traffic is in Denver! There are five solid lanes of traffic in every direction with your turning lanes carefully placed on the side opposite you.

    • Keuka Spring 2011 Miller’s Cove Red, Finger Lakes

During a recent visit with friends, we popped open a delightful red blend from our “treasure” stash of Finger Lakes wine. It was time to unwind after a day of touring and tasting in Ann Arbor, Michigan. One of TWAV’s favorite Finger Lakes wineries is Keuka Spring, perched on a hillside overlooking Keuka Lake. The winery offers superbly crafted wines and spectacular scenery.

  • Standing Stone Vineyards Smokehouse Red

… I was introduced to this interesting Finger Lakes red blend during the Fabulous Food Show in Cleveland last month. Green Dragon and I were volunteer pourers at the Finger Lakes Wine Country booth and Smokehouse Red was one of the selections. Standing Stone Vineyards is just a short walk from Seneca Shores B&B where we usually stay during…

  • Santa Rita 2007 Triple C, Maipo Valley

… at the net. We ended up “bageling” our opponents 8-0. We had some time to kill before picking up Green Dragon and Glorious T, so I popped open this wine from Chile. I was pleased to find a 2007 available for a nice price of about $30 at Churchill’s in Perrysburg. It is a scintillating blend of 55% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Carmenere…

  • Jim Olsen Fair Angel 2012

…. This red wine blend was one of the few red wines included in my first shipment from NakedWines.Com. The blend is 50% zinfandel, 30% syrah, and 20% carignane, which is the first I’ve heard of that last grape! Thought I’d share that tidbit in case you need a reminder that I’m just a consumer, not a wine educator. The Fair Angel 2012 reminded me…

  • Deep Sea 2009 Red Blend, Central Coast

… This red blend was shared with our good friends during our trip to the Western & Southern Open tennis tournament in Cincinnati. I had brought a few bottles with me for Cincy as well as our next destination, a cabin getaway in Tennessee. When I mentioned which bottles I had, the Cabinator quickly demanded that we pop open the Deep Sea…

… “Labor Day could be a washout across parts of the East, but that may only be the beginning…” “In New York City, showers have dampened the holiday festivities Monday morning, followed by overcast skies and more rain in the afternoon and into the night hours.” “The remnants of Isaac will slowly crawl…

  • The Kids Are Alright…Are We?

… (Sample, MSRP: $12 US) from Domaine Houchart which is owned by the Quiot family from France’s famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The thing that drew me to this wine was its interesting blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault. This summer sipper possesses a lot of nice acidity that makes it a pair well with many different food combinations. I…

  • Poor Man’s Chef: The Machinist

… Salad. My die to put the stamp on this creation? The 2008 Anka (Sample, MSRP: $20 US) from Chile! Made from organically grown grapes, it’s a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 7% Carmenere, 4% Syrah and 1% Petit Verdot. Whoa…that’s quite a list, but it added up to 100% delicious! 3 Stars out of 4 for the 2008 Anka. With its humongous smoky black cherry, green bell pepper, black currant, black pepper and roasted almond flavor, it was the perfect choice to complete this meal. …

  • Is pink the new wine color?

… Champagne, such as the gorgeous Brut Nature Zero Dosage Rosé by Drappier. What is the situation now? The ambiguity of the color itself contributes to a lot of misapprehensions and misunderstandings. In the French tradition, for example, pink wine is traditionally a blend of several grapes, such as grenache, cinsault or mourvedre. In the US…
