Gewurztraminer

A slew of summer wines from Ontario reviewed from Fielding, Tawse, EastDell, Colio, Chateau des Charmes, Trius and 13th Street. Cheers!

Ahhh, summer, where the living is easy and the wine better fit perfectly on the porch, dock or poolside or we just aren’t drinking it. Give me fresh. Give me easy. Give me juicy fruit. Is that too much to ask for? It hasn’t been the greatest of summers, at least where I live in Niagara.

      The Society’s Vin d’Alsace 2012, France

…You can almost dissect this wine and pick out the nuances of the different grape varieties… The Society’s Vin d’Alsace (Hugel) 2012, France (£8.50 The Wine Society) It’s the rich peachy nuttiness of Pinot Gris along with some of the exotic rose petal of Gewürztraminer that you can smell, but then when you taste it smokiness of Sylvaner kicks in, while the citrussy freshness of Riesling cleans up the finish. Nice wine, not as blowsy as some Alsace blends can be. B+…

      Wine of the Week

… Gewurztraminer might not be as off-putting to so many people if its name were changed to Steve or Samantha, but there it is, a grape that can be made into one of the most beautiful wines in the world with a name that is almost unpronounceable.
