Tales From: Estate 1856, Dry Creek Valley

the drunken cyclist - - 7 readers - I pulled into the driveway where the only sign along the Dry Creek road read “Tzabaco Vineyards” with no mention of “Estate 1856″–my afternoon appointment. Moments after pulling in, I was greeted by Janice Schmidt, the wine maker half of the Estate 1856 team–her husband, Brian, farms the land. A quick primer on the names.

Drink Local Wine Week: The Importance of Vintage. Or Not.

Dave McIntyre's WineLine - - 6 readers - Virginia and Maryland vintners have become adept at turning challenges into advantages. Case in point: The region’s variable climate. We get hot vintages, humid vintages, even hurricane vintages that have us looking for arks rather than barrels. (Anyone remember 2011?) Harsh winters can take their toll, as can late spring frosts. Cicadas, ladybugs, stinkbugs — yep, we get those too.

Wines of the Week: October 25, 2014

… “The Mariner” Dry Creek Valley AVA 13.5% abv | $45 (sample) California’s 2011 vintage was utterly unobliging, but that makes this Bordeaux-style blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, petit verdot, and malbec seem even more victorious. Its deep ruby sheen is accented by a scent like evergreen woods on a cool, wet evening. Breezy touches…
