Super Tuscan

Tuscan wine (Italian Toscana) is Italian wine from the Tuscany region. Located in central Italy along the Tyrrhenian coast, Tuscany is home to some of the world's most notable wine regions. Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano are primarily made with Sangiovese grape whereas the Vernaccia grape is the basis of the white Vernaccia di San Gimignano. Tuscany is also known for the dessert wine Vin Santo, made from a variety of the region's grapes. Tuscany has thirty-three Denominazioni di origine controllata (DOC) and nine Denominazioni di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG). In the 1970s a new class of wines known in the trade as "Super Tuscans" emerged.

    • 15 Vintages of #Sassicaia, the Super-est. @republiqueLA @moderntaylor

I had one of the most incredible food and wine experiences of my life recently, all thanks to Dan Pirelli at the Wine Hotel. Who else would have the ability (or the vision) to put together a vertical tasting AND paired-wine-dinner with 15 vintages of Sassicaia? Nobody else. Never been done before. May never be done again. Lamb Tartare to start, alongside 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983.

    • good enough for rihanna, better for my dad

Rihanna posted this photo on Twitter the other day. It’s true: if you know, you know. Riri knows. I know. And my dad knows too, though he didn’t a mere three months ago. I got him a 2006 Sassicaia for his birthday. I was super excited to give it to him, but when he opened it he didn’t know what it was! For others who don’t, it’s what they call a Super Tuscan.

… dinner party the owner of Da Ivo, one of GC’s go-to resto’s, gave him a magnum of Sassicaia, known as one of the best Super Tuscans out there. However, he gave them the 2010 vintage (which goes for about $450). That’s like wearing a Zac Posen dress before it’s properly sewn together. A hearty red blend of Cab and Sangiovese shouldn’t be drunk…
