    • Eat Like A Local: the Best Portuguese and Spanish Restaurants in the USA

Portugal is synonymous with meandering alleys adorned with dancing laundry. The faded florals of sun-bleached sheets, starched by heat of the sun, among a waterfall of socks flowing across the lines. When we’re not picking our way carefully across the uneven stones worn smooth and often slick from the rain, we look up to get our bearings, to find the sunlight filtering down.

    • USA, Riesling (Semi-Sweet), McGregor, Finger Lakes, New York, 2013

USA, Riesling (Semi-Sweet), McGregor, Finger Lakes, New York, 2013 N/ Pleasant florals, peaches, apricots, balsa wood, yellow grasses, and light vaseline. T/ Coating full mouthfeel. A fair amount of acid still shines thorough a full payload of sweet peach and pear juice, triggering a nice mouth water. Too sweet for me, but certainly not cloying, and many will enjoy the levels here.

  • Happy Holidays!

… Yes, it has been a while since the last post. This year, particularly the second half of it, has been incredibly demanding work wise, which has left very little time for everything else, including blogging. Oh well, hopefully with the new year we will resume our… regular programming, so to speak ;-) Apologies to all my cyber friends whose…

  • Clos du Bois Chardonnay North Coast 2012

… Clos du Bois is a Californian wine manufacturer who has the stated aim of making wines that taste like they are French. It makes sense. Why fly wines half way around the world when you can make one that tastes just as good locally? Here’s the thing. I live in Europe, so why would I want to buy an American wine that tastes like a French one…

… and blueberries with a woodiness that’s more cedar than oak. It’s dry with a medium acidity and firm ripe tannins. It has quite an intense flavour of fruit, those raspberries and blueberries are still there, along with the cedar wood. There’s cinnamon and a little licorice too. It turns out the oak used in making the wine is American and French…

… is complex – the sour flavours are muted but present, there is a herbal grassy character which is balanced by ripe pears. It has a dry, yeasty character, not unlike champagne. The finish and aftertaste reminds me distinctly of a dry cider. It is not enough to merely write about the hops or the malt on this beer, both of which are minor players…

… off across the Atlantic to make wine in North America. It would be nice to think that the wine was Primitivo they’d brought with them from Italy, but as they were from an island off the Naples cost that’s unlikely. They did make money during prohibition selling home brew in New York, but again, the recipe is no doubt different now. So, stories…
